Susan Dowell, LCSW; Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Board Certified Diplomate, VP of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (2017)

Susan Dowell has been a clinical social work psychotherapist for over 35 years. She received her MSW from Boston University School of Social Work and a Masters Degree in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University.

Along with her general psychodynamic training, Susan has received advanced training in Clinical Hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing, Psychodrama, Brainspotting, EMDR, and Marriage and Family Counseling.  She is the founder and developer of Footprintings, a dynamic new three dimensional treatment approach that provides effective and easy to use tools for identifying, observing, experiencing, and repairing the relational perspective between Ego States. A creative and innovative therapist, Susan draws from these varying approaches as a foundation for developing individualized treatment for each client with whom she works. Susan serves as a Vice President and an Approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis for ASCH (American Society of Clinical Hypnosis). She was Co-Director and Co-Founder of CATCH (Center for Advancement of Training in Clinical Hypnosis) and will now be offering hypnosis training with Transforming Possibilities (See Classes Page). Susan trains health and mental health professionals both in the practice of Clinical Hypnosis and in the practice of Footprintings.

Susan is committed to assuring sound clinical hypnosis training and because of this she has served on the Education Committee and the Executive Committee of ASCH.  She also was a past co-chair of the Hypnosis Practice Committee of the New York State Society of Clinical Social Workers. Susan has written professional articles, appeared on TV, and is currently in the process of writing a book about the theory and practice of Footprintings. She has a private practice in New York City and in New Rochelle, New York. She has taught psychology at New York University and Montclair State College and has lectured and presented workshops both nationally and internationally.

Before starting her clinical practice, she worked at Hull House in Chicago as a Community Organizer for three years. She then worked as a Clinical Social Worker for seven years, at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City, first in their Admitting Office and then in an outpatient treatment program where she helped develop one of the first Methadone Treatment Programs in New York.

Susan believes in a mind and body approach to clinical treatment and sees patients and families in consultation and therapy for a wide range of different concerns. She also works adjunctively with other therapists using Hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing, and Footprintings. Susan is well respected as a consultant and supervisor to other clinicians. She enjoys teaching and supervising and finds that it deepens her clinical skills and perspective. For further information about this please visit the Professionals page in this website.
